EDEN RW9in Oldenburg, Germany 4-6 October 2016Y´tThe

The 9th EDEN Research Worship took place in Oldenburg, Germany. It ws the second time in Oldenburg, the first one was twelve years ago, in 2004. In the welcoming speak by Airina Volungevičienė the newelected  EDEN President, she reminded us what had happened since 2004, but also what will happened in the next coming 12 years, and she went through all titles for the EDEN

All keynotes can be reviewed at the EDEN You Tube Channel

The Conference took place at Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, Germany

From my perspective I found the presentation by Isa Jahnke very inspiring, and she brought some new perspectives on cross action action learning spaces, which is close to the discussion I blogged about concerning  innovative learning spaces.
Isa Jahnke on  cross learning spaces:
From interaction to crossaction... Under the premise that the digital world is a new form of multiply-emerging communication spaces, with many different layers, the book argues that human action in such a networked world is not only grounded in interactions, but rather on multiple crossactions within and across such communication spaces --- cross-action-spaces (Chapter 1).

My reflections from the Annual Innovative Learning Space Summit, Prague, Czech RepublicAnnual Innovative Learning Space Summit, Prague , Czech Republic,

“The classroom environment can work for us or against us, which is why it is first, last, and always among pedagogical concerns” –John Carrol

In late September the 22-23, 2016 the Annual Innovative Learning Space Summit, by LUXATIA International, took place in wonderful Prague  Czech Republic.

The venue was the fantastic Grand Hotel Bohemia
Prague , Czech Republic.  It is the  real pride of their Prague hotel and the conference hall is in Neo-Baroque architectural style with a characteristic name Boccaccio.

The Annual Innovative Learning Spaces summit  delved into the challenges that higher education institutions are facing. The summit provided an excellent platform for deeper understanding of the link between pedagogical practices and learning space designs. Innovative learning environments can support each institution’s mission of enabling student learning. Hearing the inspirational presentations, prepared by the expert-speakers, offered participants new ideas and viewpoints on further development of the existing learning spaces and future projects. Besides the individual presentations, this summit is meant to provide an active networking platform for the participants, which will help them with reviewing their strategies and creating solid future plans. The summit  provided an inspiring environment for further discussions about the importance of learning space design, and it will offer new tools for evaluating current designs. Networking breaks gave the possibility for the industry leaders to gather together and discuss about the future developments and the potential behind new ideas.

The summit brought together architects, academics, learning designers, learning spaces designer, ICT specialists, and even others, so it was a mic audience. Due to the diverse audience a lot of fruitful discussions came up in the light.

I had the great honor  and opportunity myself to be the key note speaker and also to chair the two days Summit and its discussion. My own presentation was on
Current global trends: Challenges ahead for quality  assurance in the field of open online learning and e-learning. See the presentation from SlideShare

The full program and the speakers can be seen here

We had so much to discuss so we created a special Facebook group on Innovative Learning Spaces please join if you want to be updated and to tune in.

It was said during the summit that the environment do something with or for us, but that we also can shape the environment to dos something for us. David Hopkins have written a nice blog on  Learning Spaces, and ask the question are we doing enough

THE PADAGOGY WHEEL- Will soon be published in Swedish. Kommer inom kort på svenska

The Padagogy Wheel V4.1, was launched in January 2016, developed for the "Next Generation''

The Padagogy Wheel by  Allan Carrington, see more below, is already translated into 21 languages, and are planned to be translated to even some more. One of them is Swedish and it will be translated by Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson, the V President of the Swedish Association fr Distance Education and Ossiannilsson Quality in Open Online Learning (QOOL) Consultancy, Sweden. Already there is  a draft and it is just for a second opinion and language check. The process can be followed in this Blog by Dr Ebba Ossiannilsson.

"The Padagogy Wheel V4.1 ENGLISH Version with 126 Updated Apps now linked back to the Apple iTunes store.  Also there are more activities in the Blooms Taxonomy and new teaching on “Getting the best use out of the Padagogy Wheel”. Please download a new version on the links below.
The Padagogy Wheel visual places the idea of motivation and capabilities at the center, which gets at one of its more compelling characteristics as a model – the meshing of technology, thinking, and student motivation. Many of the failures in #edtech are failures in #edtech integration, and frameworks like the Padagogy wheel attempt to clarify the relationship between “big picture” elements. Seeing the pieces–tablets, apps, learning goals, cognitive actions, etc.–and how they work together is everything. Without that vision, any bit of #edtech is limp and lifeless.

Some of the updated features with this new version are:

  • Links to twice as many apps: It has direct links to 122 of the latest and most popular educational iPad apps.
  • App selection criteria: to help teachers make better app decisions These also are linked to the APPitic website and each Bloom’s Cognitive Domain Category has comprehensive selection criteria.  Prompts asking the teacher to think how the app would help the user achieve the domain activities.
  • Each domain activity linked to apps:  (that’s wheel 5 from the core) is linked to a group of apps considered most useful to enhance good outcomes.
  • The SAMR model wheel better communicates the idea.  This might seem a small addition but I have added two way arrows around the wheel.  I hope this helps teachers understand that the idea is to virtually align the SAMR model with the Bloom’s category they are working with.  The idea is once one or more apps are chosen then think Redefinition if possible. Just keep in focus that the SAMR wheel is meant to spin.  It also has a link to a great video from Dr P. as we call him in the ADE community (Dr Ruben Puentedura) who invented the SMAR model, that’s also worth watching.
  • The QR codes have been updated: and provide a great way to connect the “treeware” (aka printed) poster to online resources.  Every mobile device should have a QR reader App …. they are free as well.  The email QR code is particularly cool in it sets up an email to me in your email program and even gives it a subject line and says “Hi Allan”.
  • Information available in 19 languages: This is the most exciting new feature to me and it is again thanks to the hard work of the APPitic team.  So if one of these languages is your heart language, and not English, you can research the app and the pedagogical resources in your first language. Now that opens up help to a lot more teachers.  Of course the challenge is to get a padagogy wheel in the same 19 languages … anyone like to help.
  • NEW PEDAGOGY JUST ADDED: Immersive Learning at the core of the wheel is the New Instructional Design. Simulations are the most effective pedagogy to develop graduate attributes and capabilities in learners, as well as address motivation. Linked to the new Padagogy Wheel are Immersive Learning Resources which will  help you design an build engaging experienced-based immersive scenarios.

Vid seminariet diskuteras fr.a.

I denna rapport redovisar UKÄ uppdraget.

MOOCs bör inkluderas i svensk högskola

Our new article on Implementation of open educational resources in a nursing programme: experiences and reflections

    Authors
Marie Elf, Ebba Ossiannilsson, Maria Neljesjö & Monika Jansson are the authors for this new article on Implementation of open educational resources in a nursing programme: experiences and reflections in Open Learning: The Journal of Open, Distance and eLearning (2015) Vol. 30, No. 3, 252–266.

    Abstract
The IMPOER project (implementation of open educational resources, OER) aimed to implement OER in a nursing programme at Dalarna University, Sweden. The university and its nursing programme have long engaged in e-learning, and the nursing programme has recently been awarded the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities E-xcellence Associates Quality Label. The quality award was based on the creation of a roadmap for the continuous development of e-learning and the implementation of OER. The results of the study illustrated that overall, the students and the educators were positive about using OER. They considered that this approach was a new way of learning, and they appreciated the fact that OER were free and easy to access. However, they felt overwhelmed by the amount of material that was available and they were concerned about quality. If the use of OER is to be sustainable, a change in attitudes and practices among students and teachers is likely needed regarding the use of resources on the web.

    Special Issue Information

    Dear Colleagues,
The Global High Level Policy Forum, organized by UNESCO and the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) in June 2015 aimed to:
turn international policy statements into actions to ensure equity, access, and quality which encourages countries to provide inclusive, equitable, quality education and life-long learning opportunities for all. In particular, this is to respond to the scale and urgency of need for higher education in the period 2015 to 2030 due to the expected massive growth of students.
The actions aim to encourage, facilitate, and embrace the power of online, open and flexible Higher Education for the future we want for a sustainable global development, and to allow education for all. Thus, we have to concentrate, and to look at the sunrise and what is coming on the horizon related to the entire concept of opening up education, instead of just looking at the sunset of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). We can not educate today’s students with methods from the past century, for a future we do not know anything about.
This Special Issue on MOOCs  will address some burning themes:

    • new pedagogy and learning engagement
    • the death of the MOOCs
    • MOOCs and inequality
    • can MOOCs address the need to “skill” the population around the globe
    • who is the next generation of learners, teachers, managers, administrators
    • opening up learning to ensure equity, access, and quality
    • credentialization and recognition of MOOC-based learning
    • if MOOCs are the answers, what are the questions

    Keywords
